Ceramic Painting How To's

How it works and FAQ

At the Maple Seed Collective we offer a range of activities including painting ceramics with either glaze or acrylic paint!

Ceramic Glaze vs. Acrylic Paint

When ceramic glaze is applied it is fired in a kiln to give it a smooth, glassy, food safe finish. Good for dishes and decorative pieces.

When acrylic paint is applied, followed by a waterproof top coat it has a glossy finish but is not considered food safe. Good for decorative pieces.

Do I need to book a time to come?

Nope! If our studio is open, you can come in and paint your own pottery

How long does it take?

depending on the size of the ceramic it can take anywhere from 1 hour to multiple hours. If you don’t finish you can always come back another time to finish with glaze or take it home with you if you are using acrylic paint.

When will I get my finished piece?

If you choose to glaze your ceramic, once you finish your creation we will send it to the kiln to be fired. This can take a week or 2 (possibly longer depending on volume) once it’s been fired you can come pick it up.

If you choose to paint with acrylic you can take home your finished piece same day or get a take home kit and complete it on your own time.

What is a take home acrylic painting kit?

With acrylic painting you have the option to paint in studio or take it home with you to paint. Take home kits include the ceramic, acrylic paint, topcoat, brushes, and instructions.

How much does it cost?

The cost varies depending on the size of the piece. The price of our ceramics includes the glazing and firing.
There is a 15% discount on ceramics when using acrylic paint.
